Strange but interesting article on Benedict Cumberbatch in the London Magazine
Tell me, why have all the girls and boys fallen in love with Benedict Cumberbatch? There was a moment in the first episode of Tom Stoppard’s Edwardian drama, Parade’s End, when Sylvia, the errant wife of Cumberbatch’s character, Christopher Tietjens, decides to leave her lover and return to her husband.
“Why?”, wailed her horrified lover, wielding a gun in a vain attempt at finding the courage to shoot himself. “Because,” she says, crispily, “he knows everything about everything and it’s the difference between being with a grown man and trying to entertain a schoolboy.”
Sylvia is talking about Tietjens, but, in that simple line, she explains the basis of our strange new crush on the self-described startled meerkat, the hammerhead shark with a head the size and shape of Sid from Ice Age – better known as Benedict Cumberbatch.
When did it happen? The actor, 36, has been knocking around for a while. After an education at Harrow and a year at drama school, parts in Heartbeat, The Other Boleyn Girl and To The Ends Of The Earth have never been hard to come by. Yet a quick straw poll reveals that it was the dominatrix scene in the second series of Sherlock that did it.
Like the sudden appearance of Colin Firth’s Darcy out of the water in his breeches and wet shirt, this clever, complicated, awkward man was suddenly sexual too. “I’ll never forget it for as long as I live,” says one obsessive new fan.

Benedict Cumberbatch On ‘Elementary’ Misquotes, His Secret ‘Star Trek’ Role And More
Last month, “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch was reportedly quoted as saying some less than complimentary things about CBS’ Sherlock Holmes reimagining, “Elementary,” starring his friend and “Frankenstein” co-star Jonny Lee Miller.
The internet then exploded with speculation and conspiracy theories, before Cumberbatch released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter to clarify that he was misquoted.
On the red carpet for BAFTA’s annual pre-Emmy Tea Party, HuffPost TV caught up with the affable Brit to discuss the misunderstanding — and to try to wrangle some intel about “Star Trek 2” from the Emmy nominee.
There’s been a lot of controversy over this so-called “Sherlock” versus “Elementary” rivalry, and you seem to keep being misquoted all over the place …
I know, I know … The only shame about it is that Jonny and I are friends, and they try to get a fight where there ain’t gonna be none. I’m such a fan of his work, always have been — we worked together very closely in “Frankenstein” about a year and a half ago.
I was so sad to have missed it in London and in its movie theater showingsover here.
There might be another cinema airing of the live recording that they did soon … I think we’d all love, at some point, to do it in New York or [in LA], schedules permitting; it would be a great thing to bring to the States. We’ll see. But that’s what hurt me about it — it’s a very high class problem to have, to be over-scrutinized for every word you say, but when people start quoting you for things you didn’t say, that’s when it becomes a bit weird and you lose control. I just made sure that he was alright and of course he was, because he’s a grown-up. I issued a statement saying “this is not what I said at all.”
I know you won’t be able to reveal anything about “Star Trek,” but I have to ask …
It was an amazing experience … I was bound to say that, but it genuinely was. It was just extraordinary. He’s a wonderful human being to be around, J.J. [Abrams] — on every level, as a dad, as a friend, as a director, as a musician … He’s a polymath, he’s a really talented human being. And he has time for everyone and it’s all done with a really genuine interest in the story. So for all the bangs for your buck that you’re gonna get with the film — which there are going to be aplenty — you have an investment, you care about what’s happening to these characters, so it was really exciting.
Season 3 of “Sherlock” will reportedly begin filming in January. Cumberbatch can next be seen (or heard) in the first part of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy, “An Unexpected Journey,” alongside “Sherlock” co-star Martin Freeman on December 14.

Seems like Benedict Cumberbatch has accomplished at least some of his goals.
“I’ve been very lucky at what’s happened in my career to date, but playing something as far from me as possible is an ambition of mine - anything from a mutated baddy in a comic book action thriller, to a detective.” (May 2005) ~Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch May 2005 article

The African continent provided plenty of opportunities. “The cast had great fun together. We had poker nights, beach parties, dune buggying, horseback safaris. One weekend we went to a game reserve called Phinda, where we were treated like royalty and had our own cook.
“It was really posh, and the most expensive treat I gave myself during filming. I then learnt to scuba dive in one of the most beautiful places on God’s earth, about a three-hour drive from where we were filming.
“I’d already been whale watching, but on my second dive I swam with a whale, who was about ten feet away from me. It was magical, the most beautiful sight and it had a baby whale swimming by its head.
“When I finished filming in Cape Town I went swimming with great white sharks. I was in a cage and they were fed just beside us. It was terrifying and wonderful - they are such a potent force of nature.”
After filming he headed for Namibia, wanting to be in a dry hot and arid climate after four months on a boat. The airport for remote Windhoek, where he ventured, was literally marked out with pebbles. Half an hour after arriving, Cumberbatch was back up in a plane, this time with one propeller, about to do his first sky dive.
“When you freefall for 7,000 feet it doesn’t feel like you’re falling: it feels like you’re floating, a bit like scuba diving. I was strapped to an instructor and when we took off out of the plane I thought, ‘I’m either going to be landing very softly or hurtling towards my death’. I couldn’t stop screaming - it was an incredible experience.
“I did a really touristy thing and I got a video made of my jump. There is an unflattering film of me, double chin flapping around my ears, going through the G-Force and going ‘oh-my-God’ - and a lot worse!
“It was the most exquisite sensation and when I landed on the ground I wanted to do it again. I felt incredibly horny as well, because it’s such an extreme thing. You think, ‘God, I’ve just had the most massive bite out of life and I’m really hungry for more’.”
After a night sleeping under the stars amongst the red sand dunes, he did do another jump and then took the Namibian equivalent of the Orient Express.
“I’ve been kayaking and white water rafting when I was in India. This really re-awakened my sense of just having fun with your body in nature.”
Hawking Appreciation Post, because there can never be enough of them.
Benedict had two meetings with Professor Hawking.
“One was before filming, which was terrifying,” he admits.
“He’s such a presence and you have to really know what you want to say to him or ask him because it takes such a huge, phenomenal effort for him to communicate with you; you think, ‘I really don’t want to waste this man’s time’.
“It was a script-editing meeting and we were both looking at each other from opposite ends of the table, then we just caught each other’s eye and smiled.
“It was really nice. At the end of the meeting, he said, ‘I think it’s going to be great, good luck’ – and we all walked out on air.”
The second meeting was when Professor Hawking came on set during filming at Cambridge.
“I was dressed up as him as a young man, so there was lots of joking and I felt much more at ease with him,” explains Benedict.
“I was myself rather than thinking: ‘I’m a stupid actor, how on earth can I impress someone like this? I don’t know what to say to make me feel worthy of playing this man’.
“He was so accommodating and really sweet and he teased me. He said: ‘You’re better looking than me; I was more scruffy than you’.
“I’ve seen the photographs and it’s not true,” grins Benedict.
“But he was very funny and made me laugh. He’s got a good sense of humour. It takes a long time for a one-liner to come out, but when they do, they’re fantastic!”
